Paralegal Continuing Education

Paralegal Continuing Education

The general trend of getting into the legal profession is to become a paralegal first. There too, people will try to go for the lower degrees first, such as the associate's degree in Paralegal Studies. This becomes enough for them to get into the profession. Once there, they can work their way upwards by opting for paralegal continuing education.

The associate's degree for Paralegal Studies is a course of two years' duration. This course alone is enough for a person to get a job as a legal assistant, provided the course has been taken through an American Bar Association (ABA) or through an institute that has suitable accreditation. However, since this is the lowest level course, associate paralegals try to improve their qualifications with continuing education.

The next step in the paralegal education is to become a bachelor in Paralegal Studies. This is a four year course if taken in a classroom, but there are several online programs that provide the bachelor certification in much lesser time. Additionally, because the person already has an associate degree and probably experience working as a paralegal, the course will take lesser time. Most online courses follow the rules set by the ABA and have exams on the guidelines of the National Association of Legal Assistants.

There are two main exams that can be given in order to become a paralegal. The first exam is the Certified Legal Assistant (CLA) exam, passing which enables a person to get on with the paralegal profession. The second exam is the Paralegal Advanced Competency Exam (PACE), which makes the paralegal a Registered Paralegal. The PACE can be taken only after the paralegal has obtained a bachelor's degree and has earned at least two years of experience working in the field.

However, the paralegal continuing education need not stop there too. Some paralegals progress beyond their bachelor's degree and PACE certification and go for the master's degree. This means a significant increase in their salary and they can look for more lucrative jobs in their field.

Most people who look for a paralegal CE program tend to go through the Internet. This proves to be highly beneficial because they do not need to spend time for training in physical classes, which in any case, they cannot afford to do. It is easy to find a reputed law university providing an online program nowadays with the requisite certification. For that reason, people are finding it much more secure and convenient to go through an online process.

A paralegal's job is a beginner's foray into the legal world. This job tells you what being in the legal profession is all about and whether you really want to be here, the pay packet notwithstanding. Hence, beginning with a low level degree makes sense and then you can follow through with the paralegal continuing education. This is the way most flourishing legal careers have been made and even if you begin thinking along these lines, there is definitely no harm done. Just make sure the institution you select is reputed and can offer what it promises to.
